Groundbreaking ceremony of Fazer's new chocolate factory arranged in Lahti

The groundbreaking ceremony of Fazer's new chocolate factory was arranged on Monday 29 September 2025 on the site, located in the Pippo industrial area in Lahti. The construction works of the factory began in the summer and it is scheduled for completion in 2028. Fazer invests approximately EUR 400 million in the new factory. The investment is the largest in Fazer's history.

The groundbreaking ceremony of Fazer's new chocolate factory was arranged in Lahti, Finland, on Monday 29 September 2025. Although works on the site have been underway for some time, the groundbreaking symbolises the official start of construction of this significant investment.

The groundbreaking ceremony of the new chocolate factory was also honoured by the presence of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, who presented the greetings of the government.

"This is a significant milestone for Fazer and the entire Finnish food industry. The new chocolate factory in Lahti represents not only technological progress, but also Fazer's strategic investment in the future of food. It is a concrete indication of the Finnish food industry’s ability to renew itself and grow, and at the same time, strengthen its position in the international markets," said Christoph Vitzthum, President and CEO of Fazer Group, in his speech.

The groundbreaking ceremony of the new chocolate factory was also honoured by the presence of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, who presented the greetings of the government. In his speech, Orpo highlighted the potential of Finnish food exports and the importance of genuine Finnish quality in international competition.

In connection with the ceremony, a time capsule was buried into the foundations of the factory. The time capsule contains, among other things, a box of Fazer Blue chocolate pralines, specifically produced for the event, and a greeting from Fazer’s personnel to future generations.

The new factory will strengthen Fazer's position as the leading confectionery manufacturer in the Nordic countries. It will enable Fazer's international growth and also contribute to a significant increase in Finnish food exports. Fazer already today accounts for 15% of Finnish food exports.

More efficient and sustainable production

Fazer announced the chocolate factory investment in July 2025. The new factory combines Fazer's chocolate expertise with automated production lines and new technology that can be used to produce completely new types of products. Thanks to electrification and comprehensive energy recycling, the factory will be CO2 emissions-free, and the efficient use of raw materials enabled by the new technology will also significantly reduce production waste. BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) environmental classification will also be applied for.
